Description:As the war progressed, folks saw the need for different diameters for fuses for common shells vs. case shot shells. The construction of the Hotchkiss case shot shells required a more elaborate setup and the fuses for common shells wouldn't work. So they made the diameter of the common shell fuses smaller so the two wouldn't get mixed up.
