Book: Mullinax expanded edition page 45
Location Recovered: Fairfax Court House, VA
Description:Rare buckle. Early in the war a few Confederate troops carefully removed the "US" from their artillery buckles to make these plain faced 2pc buckles. This one fits the time period exactly as it was recovered in the '50s or early '60s from the June 1861 Fairfax Court House battlefield.
This is the money half, and the other half with the plain wreath is easier to find because they are the same as were used on the US marked plates. Has been vouched for by Tom Goodloe and Gary Williams.
Keeper height measures 63mm.
