Location Recovered: Blockade runner shipwreck near Charleston, SC

Description:Quarter section of a 3 inch Britten segmented shell from the Pete George collection. Recovered from CSS Georgiana blockade runner shipwreck. Recovered prior to understanding of salt water preservation through long term electrolysis, these are all a bit crusty. Comes with 2 other fragments including a part of the shell nose section.

According to Dickey and George's "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", "No projectiles of this pattern have been unearthed on Civil War battlefields. They almost made it into Charleston, S.C. on the blockade runner "Georgiana", along with the two 3" rifles marked "Vavasseur, 1862, London."
