Description:Note: The one pictured was sold. The one for sale is the other half of the one pictured and is identical other than being a reverse of the one pictured. This new one has somewhat better iron on the outside surface.

This is a decent example of the part of the Hotchkiss shell that goes bang! While this shell is missing the nose and sabot it does show the interesting parts. You can clearly see the nice brass Hotchkiss time adapter. You can also see the pusher plate that separated the powder in the lower half from the case shot containing upper half. Note that this was one of the early styles in that the fuse was not connected to the powder chamber with a tin tube. The balls are suspended in black matrix. Note the thin area at the top of the base shot area. This allowed the shell nose to break off easily forcing the balls forward into the enemy troops when the powder cavity went off.

The iron on the outside of the shell was not in good shape which justified the cutting. But it has been cleaned and coated and is stable.

Half shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
