Description:An excellent invention by the Confederates and introduced after 1862, the Mallett polygonal cavity shell was widely used in a variety of calibers; this is a 12-lber. The shaped powder cavity caused the shell to break into equal sized fragments when exploding. They come in 4 different shapes. This one is the 5-sided type.

This shell half is in excellent condition. It has a very clean outer shell surface as well as a very clean cavity. You can clearly make out the 'corners' of the powder cavity also known as the lines of weakness. This is an excellent example to have in your collection.

Shell half is inert, cleaned and coated.
