Description:These are two very neat frags to show the construction of some 9" cannon balls. this was a very popular caliber cannon and they were found in all fronts of the war. By the end of the war they were being phased out for the bigger guns as ships with iron plating could pretty much withstand the 9" balls without much damage.
The piece on the left is from the side wall of the shell. It also still has some of the threaded fuse hole that held the water cap time fuse.
The piece on the right is from the bottom of the shell and is known as a coulot. This is where the powder cavity was made with a flat bottom which resulted in the pie shaped piece on explosion. No one is sure of the purpose.
Both pieces have good hard metal and display nicely. They are coated and, of course, inert.
