Uncommon cartridge type, this is a .44 "Wesson" for use in the Ballard rifle. As the song goes, "When Stoneman's cavalry came..." but rather than tear up the tracks they captured the very important salt mines on which the Confederacy was dependent.

A cool piece of history I got schooled on by Pete George who I got these from. Reassembled cartridges are $40 and the slugs themselves are $25.
