Description:
While all grape stands are hard to get in dug or non-dug condition, this caliber is a very hard to get grape stand. This one is for a 12 pounder smoothbore cannon. The US had converted to canister by the start of the American Civil War so most of the few used during the war were either surplus from before the war or Confederate manufactured. These were initially designed to fire shot big enough to take out sails and rigging but early in the Civil War the ships were tough enough not to be much bothered by grape though it was still used some in larger calibers.
This parts in this example example was recovered at the battle of Shiloh. The rings and center bolt are reproductions while the two plates and balls are original and dug on the battlefield. The balls and plates have been cleaned and are in good shape. The center bolt is made correctly to fit into the dimple on the bottom plate. Note that the bolt unscrews and the stand can be disassembled as you see in one image.
If this stand was all original it would go for around $2500. It displays very well and has been in my collection for a number of years.
Projectile is inert and cleaned and coated.
