Description:
Perhaps one of the best condition shells we've had to offer, this is a Type-I (bird cage variety) James bolt made for the 14 pounder (3.8" caliber) rifle. It is in perfect condition for its age. The iron is flawless and still retains the black arsenal paint. The sabot is also flawless still tightly wrapped around the shell with no bumps or dings. The neatly stitched canvas over the lead is in super shape. From being handled, etc. the canvas has age coloring but that just makes the fact that it is canvas more visible. When viewed from the bottom you can see the 4 lead fill holes are brightly white from patina of the lead. Interestingly they did not paint the inside of the bird cage as it is just nice raw metal. Truly one of the best examples of a non-battlefield Civil War artillery round out there, this will most assuredly stand out in your collection. As you can see, it is not inexpensive and reflects the price that the one who sold it to me deserved to get.
