Description:
A very rare item (R8+ in D&G, R10 in Bell), this is a size that doesn't come up often. The calibers smaller than the 32 pounder (6.4" caliber) are generally less seen than the bigger calibers which still served some good use firing into ships and forts. But with rifled cannon, the lines tended to be too far apart to be of much use and worth hauling around by horses.
This particular round was found with 3 or 4 others by Greg Craven in a Confederate battery emplacement outside Charleston. For a Charleston and CS projectile, it is very good. It has not been disassembled and has been out of the ground (high ground) for a long time. The assembly is very solid. The negative is that the center does have some iron flaking that has not been removed. The owner opted to leave it in place. One of the rings did have some flaking over about 2-3 inches and has been reinforced with some (black, shiny) material such as JB Weld. The nut on top has some iron loss but is solid and holds it together. It really doesn't detract much and I didn't notice it for a while. You can see this in the images below. The bulk of the iron is quite smooth with both plates being near perfect. It displays very well. Adding a rope handle will really enhance the display.
If you like rare CS items, this is one not to miss.
NOTE: I can't take a chance on this rare and somewhat fragile shell being damaged so I won't ship it. You can pick it up at the upcoming Gettysburg (Oct 25th) or Central Virginia (November Doswell) shows or arrange for someone you know that is coming to pick it up. Any questions, let me know.
Additionally, a neat side bar on this shell is that it is from the collection of Jack Bell, the author of "Civil War Heavy Explosive Ordnance" or as most collectors call it: 'the heavy artillery book'. Jack has been collecting and sharing information about artillery for decades and is one of the hobby's greats.
Projectile is inert and clean. Not sure of any coating but there is no surface rust so might be treated with something.
