Description:
This rarity 8 shells is often confused to be a 4.5" caliber because the difference is so minor but it is in fact a 4.4". It measures 4.28" in diameter which would be too small for a 4.5" gun.

This is a Schenkl for the 30-lber Dahlgren gun and uses a middle size Schenkl Navy percussion fuse which in itself is rather uncommon. The fuse has a distinct patent date on it's face and is in good condition. The fuse does seem to be missing the slider so it is likely the fuse center cap is not native to the shell. A nice thing about the fuse is it unscrews from the shell easily.

The iron is quite good with only some light ground action over the shell. There is nothing big. You can clearly see the faint bourrelet on the nose and the distinctive hook-slant ribs on the tail that allowed the paper sabot to impart a spin on the shell when fired.

This shell is from the incredible California collection amassed by the late Bill Tracy.

Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
