Description:
This is one of the rarest and nicest projectiles we have offered on Bullet And Shell. This projectile is a 32 pounder Cannon ball that used the Naval Water Cap fuse adapter. Those alone are uncommon but I've never seen a non-battlefield version (though I know some exist). This projectile is still on the sabot with the original straps and tightening twine. Being a naval projectile the straps have a dark coating (I don't know what it is) that keeps the salt air from causing corrosion while at sea. The twine that pulls the straps tight to secure the ball to the sabot is in good shape and also coated to protect from moisture. The wood sabot is also sealed I presume to keep it from absorbing and swelling which would cause loading issues. The only issue is that one of the strap ends at some point in this shell's history is broken off below the twine. The other three ends are in great shape. The shells iron is of course wonderful. The water cap fuse unscrews easily and is dated "1863". Another neat thing about this shell is that the bushing that holds the water cap has the Navy anchor stamped on it. This is visible on the bottom edge in the image below showing the adapter across the fuse hole.

This fabulous historical piece comes from the collection of Jack Bell who wrote what is known to the artillery collectors as the heavy artillery book: Civil War Heavy Explosive Ordnance. This cannon ball is the fuse picture on the lower left on page 49 in his book.

Please note that due to the rarity and fragility of this relic, I do not want to ship it. We can arrange to meet at a show or I can give it to someone at the show to bring to the buyer or in my travels arrange to meet. My apologies for the inconvenience but I can't take a chance on this rare item.

Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
