Description:
NOTE: The small 3" Hotchkiss is shown only for size comparison and is not part of this sale. It will be available soon as a separate sale item.
This rarity 8 Hotchkiss shell is designed and manufactured to be used in the 30-lber Parrott rifle. While Robert Parrott forbade the use shells other than Parrott shells be used in his Parrott guns, we know that some other types did get manufactured for them such as Hotchkiss and Schenkl. These big Hotchkiss are neat and I always wanted to find one. I came close with two noses but never a whole one.
The iron on this shell is super with only the most minor of ground action as you can see. The lead sabot is intact and shows good rifling from the big 30-lber gun. There are a couple of small pulls on the lead but the sabot is completely in place and they don't detract. The big base cup has most of the patent date visible. The shell used a wood fuse adapter for a paper time fuse which are missing. since the image was taken I cleaned out the fuse hole and it a nice tapered pretty clean hole now and ready to accept a wooden adapter if you have one.
This is a much better example than you typically see for this uncommon shell.
I can clean off the old collection numbers if preferred. I do not know where they are from.
Projectile is inert, cleaned and coated.
