Description:Here is a nice Mullane shell from the Jack Bell collection. It is in very good shape and still contains all 3 pins in the sabot and the original bolt that holds the sabot to the shell. This is the longer pattern with a body length of 7.5" and an overall length of 8.75". It is not shown in the Dickey & George book.
The shell was cast with a tapered fuse hole to accept the wooden adapter. The body is in very nice shape and lathe marks can be seen on the bourrelets. The sabot shows excellent rifling of the 7 lands-n-grooves of the ordnance gun that fired it. As you can see, it held onto the shell and is in great shape with nice patina. This must be an early dig as the sabot pins that prevent rotation are still present and in good shape. This shell used the long bolt which in addition to holding the sabot to the shell, secured a wood block to help the sabot take the rifling and stay on the shell. Overall this is a really nice example.
Additionally, a neat side bar on this shell is that it is from the collection of Jack Bell, the author of "Civil War Heavy Explosive Ordnance" or as most collectors call it: the heavy artillery book. Jack has been collecting and sharing information about artillery for decades and is one of the hobby's greats.
Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
