Description:While we offer lots of 10 pounder Parrott shells, since the fuse is typically made of a zinc alloy, they are often in poor shape. This shell has a really super nice percussion fuse of the one piece design. Prior to this design the Parrott percussion fuse was two pieces: a slider that was dropped in the fuse hole and sat on a ledge at the bottom and a threaded cap that screwed into the top of the fuse hole. This type fuse had a threaded body that contained the slider and cap so that it was just a single unit to screw in which did not rely on the shell being cast with a shelf to stop the slider from going down into the powder cavity. What makes this fuse especially nice is the condition. The spanner holes are clearly seen on the fuse body flange and the center cap. Even cooler is that the leather washer is intact and present under the fuse flange. This washer was to help prevent the cannon flames from getting past the fuse to cause early ignition. This fuse has a wonderful white patina.
The iron body on this shell is solid with just some peppering of the iron from being in the ground. It displays quite well as you can see in the images. The sabot it the later war type III with the groove to help prevent base chipping. The sabot appears unfired and is in perfect shape with excellent patina.
Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
