Description:Recovery location is given as Port Hudson, Louisiana as there are no known recoveries elsewhere that I am aware of. They were fired by Holcomb's Vermont Battery.
This is the Sawyer bolt for the 3.67" Sawyer rifle. The iron body has a tapered rounded base such that when the cannon went off, the driving force would push the lead upward and outward into the rifling. Most, like this one, exhibit at least decent rifling.
The condition of this projectile is better than most examples. While the exposed iron nose shows some ground action, it is minimal with nothing deep. The shell iron looks to have only been hand cleaned and could probably display better with some more detailed cleaning. The lathed ring just at the top of the lead is clearly visible. Unlike most of these, the lead does not have any pulls on it remaining completely intact against the iron. As mentioned, it shows excellent rifling on one side with the other side mostly smooth from being flattened by impact. This is typical and the case as well with mine.
The bottom is stamped with "PATENTED NOV.12,1855" as most of the 3.67" Sawyers are. This one is reasonable legible after being fired from the cannon. There aren't many projectile types with date stamps on them.
Here is a rare chance at a nice example. We've only ever sold a couple of these so they don't come along often.
Projectile is inert and the iron is coated.
