Description:These shells are pretty uncommon and hard to get in good shape. This is an early war Navy Schenkl shell designed for the 30 pounder Dahlgren rifle. They were withdrawn in service in 1862 so were largely not used until the US military put them back in service at Port Hudson to help pound the Confederates into submission there. They have also been found on the USS Barrataria wreck on Lake Maurepas in Louisiana.
This shell is the one on page 364 in Jack Bell's book on Heavy Artillery. The iron is in very good condition with only enough ground action to show it was dug. It has a very nice dated Schenkl percussion fuse that easily unscrews. The Schenkl patent information is clearly read on the face of the fuse. These football shaped Schenkl shells are very distinctive. If you like Schenkl shells, don't pass this one up!
Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
