Description:This is a really good example of a 3 inch Hotchkiss percussion shell for the ordnance rifle. It could also fit and be used in the 3 inch Parrott gun.
The iron is very good with only the slightest amount of peppering. The nice dark brown color looks great. The sabot has the faint stamping of the patent dates. The powder cavity is empty and clean. The sabot is dark with some dark patina on it. It appears to me that it was coated with polyurethane or something that darkened it. The sabot is bigger than the iron indicating it was fired and as such has some shallow dings and spots from rolling around in it's past but they really don't distract.
Given this shell was design for a percussion fuse it does not have flame grooves. And the percussion fuse easily unscrews. The small lettered date stamp is very clear on the fuse face. Additionally the center cap unscrews and the lead safety plug is still in the base of the fuse. The fuse is a great buy in itself.
Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
