Description:This ball was recovered from the Petersburg, VA defense lines as indicated by the "Petersburg" lettering on the shell put there by the digger. I can't tell for sure but this is likely a mortar shell and likely of Confederate use. It is possibly a CS polygonal cavity shell as well for the 24-lber Howitzer but can't currently tell. Some cleaning and metric gathering might give insight into what it more accurately is.
The shell used a wood fuse plug that by this time of the war was only used by the Union in their mortar shells.
Overall a good ball. The shell is in as found uncleaned condition. I can remove white lettering if desired.
Shell is inert.
