Description:This shell is as distinctively Southern as it gets. While both sides used cannon ball extensively, this cannon ball has some things that you don't see in northern cannon balls:
Copper CS fuse adapter
Iron case shot ball inside
Lead plug in a hole used to load the iron case shot
All of these are only found on CS Balls.
The iron on this ball is very good with only a bit of ground action. The Fuse is in very good shape and still has the remnants of the paper time fuse in it. The side loading plug is very visible and clean. It appeared to have white patina that had turned yellow with time after being coated with varnish or something but on close examination I see that it is applied color. It is likely some White Out that someone missed rust dust or something to give it 'patina'. But you can't tell unless you look closely. The original patina was lost when the shell went through electrolysis. It is likely the cleaner wanted to preserve the paper in the fuse and since the fuse and side plug can't both be above the electrolysis water line the side plug got cleaned. It really doesn't detract from it.
Shell is disarmed, cleaned and coated.
