Description:Offered here is a standard Virginia Read shell found on all theaters of the war. They are highly desirable by collectors. Distinctively they have raised bourrelets which give them different look from the typical smooth Read shell. But this look had a practical reason in that the manufacturing process only had to lathe the raise rings and not the entire shell body. As there a slightly shorter and thus lighter they were typically fired from an Ordnance rifle or something similar.
Condition of this shell is very good. The iron is lightly peppered but very hard and crisp with distinctive bourrelets. The bourrelets are very crisp with nice edges. The CS copper time adapter is present but has a chipped spot on two sides from impact into some rocky ground presumably. Sabot is complete with nice 7-groove rifling though it is bent under a bit on one side but stands up fine. There is a small lathe dimple in the base
What makes this shell most interesting is an asterisk stamped on the upper bourrelet. Though seen on Brouns periodically this isn't often seen on bourreleted Read shells. The stamp is very distinct and easily seen.
All in all a very good shell to add to your collection.
Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
