Description:This is one of the big boys with a weight of 100 pounds. It is a cannon ball for the 10 inch Columbiad gun which were big work horses early in the war until the bigger guns were developed and found their way to the war. This shell has the lifting ears that are only seen on some examples. What makes this relic special is that it was recovered with the seacoast fuse in it which is not often seen. This fuse was designed to turn the old wood adapter balls into a water cap so it could be fired more effectively by the Navy. This seacoast is missing the center cap but otherwise is in nice shape with great patina. Another interesting thing about this ball is that it appears to have about a 3 inch diameter fill or vent hole on the bottom. You can see this somewhat in the bottom view image. I don't recall seeing one that big. The iron is very good on this shell as you'd expect from a shell that was likely deep in that great Vicksburg dirt.

I got this shell from the diggers family and the provenance is solid that it was dug in Vicksburg. Most likely it was fired by a Union gun boat on the Mississippi River into the city of Vicksburg.

Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
