Description:This is the typical Virginia Style Read shell found on lots of battlefields in all theaters. Their style is distinctively Confederate with the bourrelets and copper fuse adapter with the two spanner holes. The shell was designed for the 3" Ordnance Rifle but can be fired from other 3" guns as well.
And, in fact, this shell appears to me to have been fired from a gun with the Saw Tooth (Hook Slant) style rifling. It appears very similar to the Brooke gun rifling seen in the big cannons. This would make the gun that fired this round a Tredegar 3" Rifle.
The copper on this shell, both fuse and sabot, are in excellent condition. Both have nice patina with the fuse being a little more green likely due to the acidic environment cause by the powder that was in the shell and fuse leaching out while buried. It has a nice look and distinctly stands out from the iron. As mentioned, the perfect sabot has nice rifling and is not distorted at all. The shell body is in good condition with light ground action all over. It appears that the iron was very porous when made. The mold line is lightly visible on both sides.
This projectile is inert, cleaned and coated.
