Description:Most everyone likes the Hotchkiss shells a great bit. They were extensively used in the American Civil War with a great deal of fuses, styles and calibers. This is one of the early ones that started it all. The distinctions that indicate early manufacture are:
1) Pewter Hotchkiss time fuse with spanner holes
2) No flame grooves on the shell side to aid in fuse ignition
3) Single patent 1855 patent date on the base
This example is in very good shape. It very likely contains case shot. It has an especially nice fuse which are often corroded or distorted on impact. This fuse clearly shows the tapered hole for a paper fuse and the two spanner holes. Iron is good with no pitting. Most of the patent date is clearly visible on the base cup. The mostly white sabot clearly shows nicely the 5 lands-n-grooves of the ordnance rifle. This is a very good example for the collection.
Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
