Description:A pre-Civil War design, the US Dyer is found on all theaters of the war in a variety of styles. They were designed to be fired from the 3" ordnance rifle and can be found in both case and common shell. The Confederates refitted a number of them to be fired back at the Union. Some have even been fitted with the CS Copper adapter and a side loader plug though quite rare. The case rounds are often made with the sulfur matrix. While some used a Schenkl percussion fuse, most were fitted with the zinc Dyer time adapter which was similar to the Parrott time adapter but slightly smaller in diameter.
This example is the typical Dyer that is mostly found as case shot though there have been some of this type found as a common shell. This round is case shot. It has the rounded nose profile and used the Dyer zinc time fuse adapter. The Zinc Lead sabot is in good shape showing a clear lubrication groove around the sabot where it meets the iron. Some rifling can be seen on the sabot. It has the 4 very good deep flame groves normally seen. This is an ice example. The shell was disarmed through the fuse adapter so as to not damage the sabot or iron.
Shell is inert and coated.
