What are these copper covered cast iron objects?

These are found with a copper cover and without. They are made of cast iron and appear to be finials or something. I've never heard of one dug by a relic hunter in a trench or artillery projectile spot. Here are two different examples.

What are these?

I think I saw one of these fired by the Fembots at Austin Powers.

I have one that came from Petersburg, Va. It is the same size and weight of a 4 lb. solid shot cannon ball used during the civil war.  3" diam and weighs 4lb exactly.

I don't think they have anything to do with civil war artillery either, but I would like to see the fence post these came off of. They are definitely very old. Jack, where did you get the one you are showing in the above pictures?

somewhere there is a pissed off owner of a fence, missing his finials !!
Truthfully, I don't think they are finials as there is no weld or attachments on the bottom, by the looks of Jack's pictures, in my humble opinion........
