9pdr shot
« on: November 13, 2011, 07:49:35 PM »
Hi. First post so I hope I do it right.
Can any of you guys tell me what the diameter should be for a 9pdr solid shot.  I have a 9pdr brought home by a guy in Graves Kentucky Battery.  After the war he revisted the locations of his battery at Fort Donelson
where his battery surrenered their 9 pds. and brought home a few 9pdr solid shot that he found.
Thanks
Dan

Dan,

The 9-pounder smoothbore had a bore diameter of 4.2-inches which is the same as a 30-pounder Parrott rifle. The diameter of the solid shot should be 4.1 inches.

Welcome aboard. We have a lot of artillery collectors on here, including myself. Some are extremely knowledgeable and can tell you anything you need to know in their sleep, NOT including me, But I am learning.

Thanks for the info.
Carl, to be  accurate, I probably should be listed as a 10" Parrot shell. :D
