Seen This Underplug Before?
« on: April 08, 2019, 01:41:04 AM »
I recently bought a small fuse collection that had a few nice things.  One was what appears ob e an oversize underplug.  It was found in the Vicksburg area.   It is slotted like the ones referred to as CS Selma under plugs.  The diameter is about 1 3/8" (1.375").  Anyone seen one of these before?  The image shows it next to the standard Bormann under plug.

There is one shown on pages 68-69 of Chuck Jones's book.  It is listed with a Broun fuse as the underplug, but these oversized Bormann underplugs were used in large caliber, case shot, spherical shells to cover the larger opening required to insert the balls.

These are different sizes that I have. I don't have a big one with slots.

Ooops...I just realize I made an error measuring. The size is 1 3/16 (1.1875").

Mike: I saw that but since he didn't give the size I wasn't sure.  This one is smaller (1.1875" vrs 1.6") than a Bormann fuse but the difference (0.4125") would leave a very narrow lip (0.2"+).  I'll have to measure a few to see where they fall.

Steve: Thanks for posting.  The brown one you have (2nd from left) looks to be this same size.  Know where it was found?  As you know but others might not, the one on the far left is the 1.6" version for the large cannon balls and is a Bormann under plug for case shot shells.

Chuck was inconsistent with his measuring, but trust me, because I own the exact piece shown on those 2 pages shown below for you:

Very cool.  Thanks guys.  I've not ever had one that I recalled.  Now I have an addition to my fuse collection.  I've been able to add a few things over the last few months.
Best,
Carl

Very neat.  Thanks for sharing.  So do I understand this went into a large cannon ball with a Bormann fuse?
