Federal Caseshot Matrix
« on: January 09, 2019, 07:15:06 PM »
Curious about the composition of the matrix material used in Federal caseshot projectiles.   I have several miscellaneous parts of frags and the caseshot themselves and wanted to make faithful recreations of exploded shell with some of the contents still adhered to them.  Make sense?  So asphalt mixture?  Tar?  Something else?  Ty

To each his own. Your relics, but for what its worth I would leave them the way they are un altered but that's just me. There's too many cut in half shells out there pretty cheap if you want some showing the interior. you can even from time to time get examples of fragments naturally having some of the original matrix and balls still attached. MHO only. Good luck in your endeavor.

Thank you.

Its just a huge box of junk thin wall frags and lead shot I've accumulated over the years.  It could be a box of junk in the garage or I can do something useful and educational with them.  Making chicken salad out of chicken shit as they say.

I don't consider fragments as junk, they are relics of the conflict

I agree with Dive, but wasn't going to say anything.

Here is a forum rendition

didn't mean to sound judgemental, I actually save rust cocoons, nails, broken glass, oyster shells out of trash pits etc. It all tells the story

Seemingly since no one has offered this in response no one is aware of that the two matrix types (black and yellow) are composed of.  I have always understood that the Black is an asphalt type of pitch and the yellow is often referred to as sulfur.  I presume they are some sort of compound based on the great variance seen in them when cutting them open.  Perhaps one of the patents gives more detailed description of how it is made.

I think there is no issue with creating the matrix example as it likely could be taken apart back to the original components if so desired
Best,
Carl

Thanks Callicles, Carl and redbob.  I will make a small experiment using roofing pitch/patch (guess black mammie is not PC?) and combine with some other items to come up with something that looks authentic.
