Just dug 24 iron case shot in a 10 ft circle ground burst?
« on: March 15, 2017, 09:08:43 PM »
Gents,

I have a question- i just dug 24 iron case shot in a 10 ft circle at bottom of a small ravine  w/ impacts from other bullets etc, I have found a CS  hex frag nearby before and other small cannon ball frags

the case shot  are .67 in dia with gangcast marks - they are found near blakeley, this site (private property) is about 400 yds from from a CS battery

Im assuming this was a CS ground burst that old timers cherry picked the large frags and didnt bother with the smaller caseshot?   By chance how many case shot were in a CS 12 lb'er ?

Thanks in advance -  Dave

Dave:

A 12pdr case shot side loader has about 94 iron case shot averaging 0.6" in diameter.  Federal Bormann shells that used 0.65" lead shot average about 80 shot to a 12pdr.
