Title: Look back in time, so to speak
Post by: speedenforcer on February 17, 2019, 07:47:52 AM
Do any of you older or shall I say more experienced collectors ever go back and look at the older price guides. I have one from 1986 (I was 16) and I was just browsing through it while in the process of getting ready for church and suddenly got a feeling of depression. Oh to dream of building a time machine. LOL.

The depression can work both ways, either back when the prices were low and you should have bought them or when the prices were high and you did buy them.

I was in Memphis TN at a Mid South Relic Hunters seeded hunt in 1980. I had brought with me  a button I had dug in Missouri a 2 piece button that had MSRy on the face of it. There was all kinds of speculation of what it was, like "Missouri Southern Rifles Co. Y "and someone thought he saw one that was dug around Shiloh. A collector offered to trade me a dug Confederate Block "I" button for it. It had $25.00 marked on it.

I didn't trade. To add insult to injury I later found out it was a button produced in the 1880's for the Missouri Southern Railway. Though quite rare it's still not a Confederate Block "I" Button.

Now about that time machine...........

I do have a  small collection of old price lists from various dealers like Tom Dickey, Jack Melton, the Horse soldier and some others dating from the early 80's.  It is fun to go back at times.  Of interest as well besides the prices is the rarity level for a few items.   One example is 12-pounder side loader cannon ball.  Today they are easily found but back then not so much and I presume a number of impact areas had yet to be discovered.  There is also a tremendous list of items that I passed on but should not have.  But I still do that today on occasion.

Yea, some of the stuff I passed on kills me.  After all these years I've only had one of those items come up again for purchase.

SteveP asked that I post some pages from an early Tom Dickey list.  Amazing prices.  Here is page 1 and the other pages will follow.

Speed:  I’d sure like to buy a collection like that.   There is a bunch I’d like in my collection.

Steve: Glad to do it. Only took a minute.
