Title: Where to go in New Orleans?
Post by: Gene WV on January 29, 2019, 10:02:29 PM
Hello all,
I will be traveling to New Orleans in early March (at the end of Mardi Gras). I will have a few days to fill, and am asking for some ideas of places to be sure to hit, or miss, while there. I’m aware of the big draw Civil War museums and attractions, but are there shops or other places to get to? I’m also looking at getting to Baton Rouge for one day. I’m interested in anyplace with nice artifacts and a good story to tell. Thanks in advance for any help.

I wish I could offer some guidance on New Orleans but I've not been there.  I'd like to see whatever exists of the battle of New Orleans.  Would also like to go out to Fort Jackson and see it.  Maybe someone can comment on if it is worth the trip.  As to a shops, Richard Angelico has one in Mandeville which is across Lake Pontchartrain on the north side but you have to call to make sure he is there as I think he sells out of his home.  His web site is;

I'd also recommend a trip to Port Hudson.  It is about 1.5 hour drive north but well worth it to see cannons, earthworks and a nice museum.

Some people only occasionally look outside the artillery and/or bullet sections so I'm sure in due time someone from that area will be able to comment.

WWII museum is a must and will take up a full day.  Confederate Memorial Hall is next door and is exceptional in terms of Louisiana Civil War history - it gets few visitors which is a shame.  Toups Meatery is the best place to eat in New Orleans in my humble opinion.  And agree with Carl on Port Hudson.

Sadly, these days there is very little interest in the general public for ANYTHING Confederate. We are the last few hold outs attempting to keep the history alive. Reminds me of the movie The Outlaw Josey Wales, We are the very last few of the un surrendered.

One more potential add - chalmette battlefield, where General Jackson defeated the British.  Not much to visually see, in all candor, but historically significant

Thanks guys, for taking the time to reply. I’ll look into those places you mentioned. And I’ll let you know what I think of the places I do get to.

I would recommend port Hudson, confederate war museum as already mentioned and https://www.civilwarnola.com.   I have taken bus tours before and they are well researched.

You can also check out Teagues(?) which is a restaurant that’s was open during he civil war and that soldiers visited.

I agree with the above, and add that oysters Rockefeller and bananas foster were supposedly invented at Brennans and, though the restaurant is pricey, they are to die for.

Hello All,
I had a good time in New Orleans. Thanks for the suggestions. Unsurprisingly, I ran out of time before I ran out of things to do.
Highlights of interest to this group:
I did visit the Confederate Memorial Hall the day after Mardi Gras. Their sign said they'd be closing early, but they didn't kick anyone out. I was blown away by the number of Pelicans I saw there (buttons and buckles)! I found the James shell in an out of the way corner.
I was able to visit Richard, of Cayenne Metal Detectors, in Mandeville, and had a good time talking to him about relics and detecting in that area.
The Louisiana State Museum in Baton Rouge had very few Civil War items, but they did have a submarine found in Lake Pontchartrain. I'd never heard of that, before.
Thanks again for your help and input.
