Description:US Navy Yard Washington Artillery ring gauge. Steel ring with wood handle. Ring marked "ORD. DEP. U.S.N.Y.W 1870 [Anchor Symbol] F.M.R." and "SMALL SHOT GAUGE 8.77." Used in the measurement.

These came in pairs used to determine whether a cannon ball was too big for the bore and woulod get stuck, or too small and windage around the round would cause it to not perform adequately coming out of the cannon.

This one is for a 9" Dahlgren ball. These are becoming harder and harder to get these days, and unfortunately a lot of them are faked.
