Description:This half shell is from a cannon ball recovered in the low areas of Savannah, GA. It is a Dahlgren 11 inch caliber which became very popular during the war due to their size which proved to be very effective against ships and forts. These are very popular among collectors due to their impressive size and that they have nice stamped water cap fuses in them.
Unfortunately this ball was recovered and not kept in water which resulted in the outside surface scaling. So it was run through electrolysis and then treated with rust inhibitor which is why it has that dark, almost black, look. It is now very stable.
it is nicely cut and shows a good bit about this shell. The bottom is flat showing what the shells that exploded with coulots looked like beforehand. Also you can see an air bubble in the base that was trapped when the shell was poured. The powder cavity is nice and clean. The cutting provided an excellent view of the fuse where you can clearly see the paper time fuse, the water cap, the channel in the water cap and all the fuse adapter components. It really displays well.
These are rarely seen so don't miss it if you are interested!
Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
