One of the most desirable cannon balls to add to a collectors display is the 12-lber or 24-lber CS Coehorn mortar with the tong holes. While frequently seen in the larger cannon balls on both sides the ears on the smaller ones are quite rare and only seen on the late war CS balls and are probably made at Tredegar. These ears negated the need for strapping a wood sabot to the shell for positioning. Jack Melton notes in his book that General Abbot stated that the US should have done the same as the wood sabots and straps were clumsy.

Note on these smaller shells the ear holes didn't have a hole in the flat face of the ear hole. The ears on the smaller balls were for positioning and not lifting as the small shells didn't need a tool to lift and move them.

This fragment is in pretty good shape. It has a clean fuse hole, remnants of one positioning ear and a very clean and nearly perfect other ear.
