I'm sure this is the rarest buckle we have offered, it is a CS frame buckle often called a double tongue frame buckle. This pattern buckle is shown on page 92 in Steve Mullinax's "Confederate Buckles and Plates" book as Plate 162. His remarks are "Rare variation with individual tongues". Also of note, I see that this is the only example of this style buckle in his book. While all the other frames have various pattern differences displayed, this seems to be the only pattern of this style.

This buckle is in excellent shape. It still has the crusty patina in many places it was dug with covering a nice brown metal underneath. The frame is still nice and square with only the slightest of curves or bends from use; they are barely noticeable. For some reason the angle of the camera gives the buckle the appearance of being out of square in the photos. Both tongues are original and move freely on the center bar.

This is really a nice piece of Confederate history found at Welford's Ford on the Hazel River just NE of Culpeper, VA.
