Description:
If you like smooth iron, you'll really like this shell! This is a Schenkl shell for the rifled 6 pounder smooth bore. They have mostly been found in the western campaign with quite a few coming from Vicksburg and Port Hudson. This variety is the style with the grooves rather than the ribs like most Schenkl shells had.

The shell used a Schenkl percussion fuse that obviously broke off on impact. You can see the impact mark next to the fuse hole where the top was snapped off and the fuse body was pushed down into the powder cavity. Of additional interest on this shell is that due to the great iron you can see the marks on the side where the chisel was used to knock off the sprue at the vent hole. This is right at the edge where the paper mache would have started.

Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
