Description:One of the most popular shells among collectors, this is a nice example of the Hotchkiss common shell. These were designed for the ordnance rifle but some have been found with Parrott rifling on them. You can tell that this is a common shell (i.e. no case shot) by the more pointed nose than the case rounds have. The common shell seems to me to be a little more uncommon (pun intended!) than the case shot rounds. I also know because I checked the cavity for matrix and balls when disarming it. :)
This fired round has really good iron with almost no ground action. The sabot is still in place with no pulls to the lead. It still has a lot of white patina. The fuse is perfect with no marks and great patina. This is a nice projectile at a good price for your collection.
Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
