Description:Everyone likes the Read shells and bolts with their distinctive bourrelets. For those who might not know the shells were made with these to reduce the wear and tear on the bore when fired by reducing the iron in contact with the tube. There is an immense variety of these shells and they were very popular.
This example is very interesting in that it is an example of extreme chipping for which many of the Reads were known for. it is seen more often on the smooth Reads and not nearly as often on the Reads with Bourrelets. This one chipped all the way around and fairly high up the shell body but somehow it never opened a hole to the powder cavity. The fuse hole is threaded for the CS copper time fuse adapter and the shell could likely be threaded to accept one. The nice thing about this shell is the nice clean hard iron. The bourrelet is very crisp with very high relief. This is a very nice example that shows well.
Shell is cleaned, coated and disarmed.
