Description:This rarity 8 bolt was recovered from Charleston. These 100 Pounder flat nosed bolts for the 6.4-inch Parrott rifle were fired at ships, forts and downtown Charleston. The flat nose was found to be more effective at penetrating hard surfaces than the bottle nose which tended to shatter more when impacting.
Unlike much of the artillery from there this wasn't from the marshes and appears to be from high ground as it has a hard surface and no graphite. There is some ground action but condition is pretty good. One side displays quite well. The sabot is the Type II band which was a narrow band with no groove; only a smooth surface on the outside of the shell. They were notorious for not taking the rifling and this one is no exception. The brass has a nice deep age patina on it.
The 4th picture is shown with a 10-lber Parrott shell for comparison. The 10-lber is not included in this sale.
This is a fairly hard projectile to get and a good one for the money.
This bolt is cleaned and coated.
