Mike O'Donnell (aka Woodenhead) had some terrific insights on it and others with the 3 flame grooves cut in the sabot.

This shell is straight out of my collection. You can still see my (very removable) catalog label on the bottom. When the thread got going I looked and turns out I have 5 of these so can share one at least.
