Description:This is a typical Virginia Style Read Shell. Unlike the smooth sided Reads this style was cast with the body slightly smaller than the bore but with two raised rings at the bottom and just below the ogive which were lathed to the bore caliber along with the sabot. This greatly reduced the work to manufacture the shell. There is a nice big fuse hole to accommodate the wood fuse adapter. The bottom has a larger than normal lathe dimple. The shell body is pretty decent but as you can see in the images does show some ground action but nothing deep; just surface scaling. The copper sabot has nice patina with no rifling indicating that it is a dropped (not fired) example.
Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
