Description:A rather uncommon shell to find is this wood fuse 6-lber. As the US had standardized on the Bormann fuse prior to the North only used shot and Bormann fused 6-lber projectiles. The South however experimented with a variety of copper adapters and even made some Bormann 6-lbers did employ some wood fuse rounds. The books show the 6-lber wood ball in the polygonal cavity variety but this one has a smoother round interior. I've seen a few dug with case shot and have one in my collection. But this variety is not listed in either the Dickey & George book or the Melton & Pawl book. They only show the Mallet polygonal cavity variety.
The iron and fuse hole on this cannon ball is very good. This one is thin walled like the case shot shells but the balls were removed if it was case. I label this as a CS shell as it most likely was unless it was pre-Civil War which is a possibility. With no provenance we will never know.
Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
