Description:This is a shell we've never offered before. They are quite uncommon. This is a French made mortar ball supplied to the Americans during the Amercian Revolutionary War. This one is from that well known cache found in a river in Virginia not far from Yorktown. Also found with this were some 13-inch mortars which I'll be listing a couple of soon.
They are called lip balls due to the protrusion around the fuse hole. This served two purposes which I think is quite neat. First it gives a deeper throat to secure the wood time adapter. Secondly it give what could be described as a handle for lifting and positioning the shell. I'm surprised they weren't used on more shells.
Iron is very good especially given its age.
Shell is cleaned, coated and disarmed. It displays wonderfully and will sure be an eye catcher in your collection.
