Description:We have had a few 7 inch Dyer shells but probably none as nice as this one. These were fired from the new Ead's gunboats during the effort to open up the Mississippi River. One is on display at the USS Cairo museum that came off the boat on display there. A few have been found at Fort Donaldson, Memphis, Vicksburg and Grand Gulf but the vast majority are found at the great naval bombardment at Island #10 located near the TN and KY state line on the Mississippi River.
The sabot is perfect. The brittle lead often chipped or had marks from the plowing of the farmer's field where most of them were found. The only marks on this sabot are excellent rifling from the gun that fired it.
The iron is quite good as well. It has been painted a somewhat glossy black. If the buyer wishes this can be removed.
The verbal history on this shell is it is one of the big pile found by Tom Dickey. It does not have his number on it as that was only put on shells that ended up displayed in his collection.
The shell has been disarmed through the fuse hole. It is cleaned and coated and ready to display. They big Dyer's are the best deal per pound of a large caliber shell you can buy. Every collection needs one!
